Halloween Spooks & Home Insurance Policies

Halloween Spooks and Your Home Insurance Policies

As the air begins to cool and the leaves start changing into vibrant colors and fall from the trees and pumpkins, ready to be turned into jack-o-lanterns, begin dotting neighborhoods across the globe our thoughts turn to Halloween and the old age ritual of trick or treating.

Whether you are planning on dressing your children (or possibly pets) up as “Frozen’s” Elsa or a character from “Guardians of the Galaxy” – both popular choices this year – chances are that you’re already gearing up for this year’s Halloween.

In fact, according to a recent survey from the National Retail Federation, 67 percent of Americans will buy a costume in 2014. The survey further found that total Halloween spending is expected to reach nearly $7.4 billion. That includes costumes for the entire family, candy and home decorations.

Whatever your plans for Halloween – whether it be to take the kids trick-or-treating, throw a killer party, or host a frightening real haunted house in your garage – you should know what risks most homeowners insurance policies will cover just in case you experience a real life fright.

Risk #1 – Accidental Trick-or-Treater Slips and Falls

Running from one house to the next in order to stockpile your candy supply can be a thrilling experience for youngsters (or those young at heart), so much so that they may not look at where there going or their wearing masks that limit their vision, and they trip and fall.

Fortunately, your homeowners’ liability coverage should have you covered, for up to $100,000 (although your minimum coverage amounts may be higher or lower). Check your policy for your exact coverage amounts or contact your agent for more information.

Tip: To help prevent children, or adults, from injuring themselves on your property, you should make sure your home including your walkway is free from obstacles and that it is well lit.

Risk #2 – Vandalism and Stolen Halloween Decorations

If your decorations are carried off, or some kid thinking he is being funny decides to egg your home, don’t worry…you’re covered. Your insurance policy typically covers all replacement and repair costs associated with vandalism or stolen property as long as those costs exceed the cost of your deductible.

Tip: Keep porch lights on later than normal and bring in any decorations including pumpkins (kids just love throwing those against houses). You may want to consider installing motion-sensor lights if you haven’t already.

Risk #3 – Candle or Decoration Induced Fires

A fire started by a candle or string of holidays lights should be covered without a problem. And, if this unfortunate event makes your home unlivable, most policies will cover the expense associated with staying in a hotel until your home has been repaired.

Tip: Only use battery operated LED candles or holiday lights this Halloween.

Have a safe and fun Halloween!!!
