Shopping for Auto Insurance? Here’s 6 Questions You Should First Ask Yourself.

Auto insurance is one of those products that go hand in hand with owning an automobile!

Most states, including Arizona, require that all drivers – whether their automobile is a car, truck or motorcycle – have a certain level of coverage.

The level of auto insurance that you choose is in a way like a security blanket in that it protects you in the event your vehicle is in an accident or becomes vandalized.

For those of you that think it’s a good idea for whatever reason, to forego on this monthly expense…it’s NOT.

In fact; you can’t afford to go without it!

Fortunately, by asking yourself the following questions while comparison shopping, you can easily secure the best rate possible for your auto insurance.

  1. How often do I drive each week?

According to DMV.ORG, those that drive fewer than 10,000 miles per year, or approximately 192 miles per week, are the ones’ that are generally provided with the lowest rates.

Whether you commute for work, school, errands, or a social life; driving less is always the way to go!

Ways to reduce your weekly mileage include using public transportation, walking, riding a bicycle or working remotely from your home office.

  1. How old is my vehicle?

For those of you that drive older makes and models, you may be in luck.

This is because new cars = higher premiums while older cars = lower premiums (in most cases).  Driving an older vehicle allows you to lower your maximum coverage limits.

This is because older vehicles carry a lower overall risk and are cheaper to replace should you get in an accident or your vehicle is stolen.

  1. Do I get good grades?

Here’s where it pays to be a smarty-pants!

Many insurance companies offer discounts to eligible full-time students who get good grades.

In most cases a B average or better.  You may also benefit from this discount if you have student drivers on your policy.

  1. Can I afford a higher deductible?

Increasing your deductible equals lower monthly premiums.  It’s as simple as that!

  1. Do I have good credit?

Unfortunately for those of you with poor credit you may be looking at paying a higher premium than you would if your credit were good.

However, there is good news!  In some states, including California, your credit rating is not considered as a determining factor when setting your insurance rate.

It is highly recommended that you find an independent insurance agent who will be more forgiving of your poor credit score.  One like Hegarty-Haynes Insurance!

  1. What professional organizations do I belong to?  If any?

Your professional organization, or discount group, may be providing you with more benefits than you initially thought.

Some insurance companies may offer money saving discounts for just being a member of a certain organization.

To see if you qualify for these discounts, ask your insurance agent for a list of eligible organizations.
